A conversation with Tom’s Dog
This exclusive interview occurred in the lobby of the corporate office
of Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream with three members
of Tom's Dog, the latest musical sensation to hit Green Bay.

TiMES: So, how did this band come to be?

Daryl (Bass Guitar): It started as idle bar talk in December ‘98.

Paul (Rhythm Guitar): Then we had a practice in February, so we had to do something
about it.

TiMES: Where’d the name come from?

Tom (Lead Vocals): We used to play in my basement, and my dog would sit and watch us. Since she was our only fan, we thought we’d name ourselves after her -- Sadie. But then Paul simplified it to Tom’s Dog.

TiMES: What do you play?

Tom: Beatles, Eric Clapton, the Stones.

Paul: Neil Young. Bob Dylan.

Daryl: Classic Rock.

Paul: Our own stuff.

TiMES: What’s your own stuff like?

Tom: Blues Rock.

TiMES: Who writes it?

Paul: Tom writes a lot in the restroom.

Tom: No...You guys usually play some music, and if it sounds good, I put words to it.

Paul: I wrote a song called, "Cheesehead Girls." Tom changed one word and wanted a
co-writer credit .

TiMES: If I made a request...say, "Twist and Shout," could you do it?

Paul: Yeah! We do that one!

Tom: We don’t take requests because we play everything we know.

TiMES: Do people dance when you play?

Daryl
: We had ‘em dancing on the tables two gigs in a row.

TiMES: What kind of musical background do you have?

Paul: Tom does karaoke.

Tom: Paul used to play in Belfast bars. He played for a band that opened for a band that opened for U2.

Daryl: I never played an instrument until February.

Paul: You can tell.

Daryl: Paul’s my mentor.

TiMES: Why would you choose a guy who never played an instrument?

Paul: He was a founder. But Josh can make a guitar sing, though. Josh -- Tom’s son -- plays lead guitar.

Daryl: Effie is our drummer. She’s the roommate of somebody who works here. We practice in her basement every Thursday night now.

Tom: We want to start doing more of our own stuff. We’re going to make a CD.

TiMES: What are you going to do with the CD?

Tom: I don’t know.

Paul: We have T-shirts, too.

Daryl: Yeah. We gave two of them away, I think.
