Here's What Happened in the Boys Room
A very brief, one-act play

It is 3:30 a.m., January 29, 1965, in the very crowded "boys" motel room of the Holiday Inn in Kalamazoo. Outside, the temperature is below zero, and a snowstorm is roaring in. John and Ann will wed later that morning. Several extended family members of the groom's parents, Fritz and Martha, have opted to share motel rooms, with the "boys" being in one room, and the "girls" in another. A marathon session of poker, beer drinking and assorted arguments has concluded in the boys room. The room is dark, and the boys are in various stages of slumber, using all available bed, couch and floor space. Strange odors and noises waft through the room, dominated by Fritz' snoring.

Uncle Joe (shouting). Fritz, Fritz. Roll over.

Fritz rolls over, and the din stops. Thank goodness, Uncle Joe had verbalized what other occupants had been thinking. However, the snoring, which sounds like an angry grizzly bear, resumes in moments.

Uncle Joe (shouting). Fritz, Fritz. Roll over.

Fritz rolls over, but the temporary respite ends when Fritz starts snoring again.

Uncle Joe (shouting). Fritz, Fritz. Roll over.

Fritz (shouting louder). Goddammit, Joe, if you wake me up again, I'm going to come over and kick the shit out of you.

The grizzly disturbed, the room is suddenly silent. Shocked and partaking in an early rite of passage, 12-year-old Jeddy suppresses nervous giggles under his blankets until he falls asleep.
