Case Study: OmegaMedia |
||||||
| Scenario: A man telephoned from Oakland, California, and said he needed
some writing help with his firms Web site. He had learned about
me and my Web site through Ilise Benun at the Art of Self-Promotion,
http://artofselfpromotion.com. Prologue: We discussed his job, and he asked me for some direct response samples. Then he went off to interview some other writers. Seven weeks later, he emailed that he finished the brunt of his preliminary writing and he wanted to get going. Challenge #1: The firm, OmegaMedia, provides multimedia design and development. They do all sorts of technical stuff that needed to be communicated clearly in an edgy, personable, professional way so people would want to do business with them. Challenge #2: I am by no means technically adroit. Challenge #3: I didnt know the guy from Adam. How was I going to express his vision in one clear, cohesive voice? If I pulled it off, would I get paid? Objective: What differentiates OmegaMedia is its grasp of the essential visual, technical and business elements of a multimedia project. With a unique arsenal of ability, skills and experience, OmegaMedia relates to Creative Directors as easily as it does to Web Application Specialists or Corporate Communications Managers. Besides getting those different types to communicate among one another, OmegaMedia knows how to facilitate their working cooperatively and efficiently. And, we had to get those messages across to Internet visitors. My Charge: Nader Nejat, the founder of OmegaMedia, had invested a great deal of time and work into researching the keys behind his firms capabilities to integrate the equally important visual, technical and business components. It was my job to keep his findings intact, while communicating them to various audiences. To Make a Long Story Short: Working via email and the telephone, we completed the project within two weeks. Clients Reaction: "Jed, thanks for the great work. Having never worked with a writer before, I wasnt sure how to proceed. Not only did you help me learn about the writing process and give me some great pointers, this project far exceeded my expectations." Nader Nejat Incidentally: I found out later that I got the job because "you did not shoot yourself in the foot" during our early discussions. Nader felt I listened and would deliver what he wanted. In addition, I was neither "too corporate nor too low-end," which mirrors the desired style and image of OmegaMedia. Rewards: I took a risk because I was intrigued by the concept and trusted the passion behind it. To my relief, a nice check arrived by Priority Mail two days after we finished. I also: Developed a customer who could refer business my way from another part of the country and an industry that was new to me. Acquired a sophisticated multimedia/interactive media contact. Learned some things about the "new technologies." Got to know an interesting person. Epilogue: Thanks, Ilise and Nader. Now, if you would like to experience OmegaMedia's revamped site, please go to http://www.omegamedia.com. And, thank you. |
