Message to a daughter who’s much like me

If you’re going to play shortstop, you’ll make a lot of errors.

When you’re the quarterback, you’re blamed for losing games.

If you carry the ball enough, you’re going to fumble.

If you yearn to bat in the bottom of the ninth to win the game, you could face a pitcher who strikes you out.

If you write a book, you’ll get some bad reviews.

Sing a solo, and everyone knows when you forget the words.

If you want to be like John Lennon, you could be a sage, change things, maybe make millions, and be hated by a lot of people.

When you perform before the crowd, you also expose yourself.

Open your mouth, and you can put your foot in it.

Stand in the limelight, and you’re an easy target.

Choose to lead, and others may exercise their right to not follow.

If you seek the glory, you also should expect and be able to take the wrath.

Risks lead to failures, as well as rewards.

Yet...

He who cannot risk, cannot win.
Admiral William F. “Bull” Halsey
